Summer 2018
Middle school is a major adjustment for all new students, but this program will educate, motivate and uplift students selected to be a part of this group. This common experience at such a transition will serve as a springboard for a variety of topics like anti-bullying, character education, stress management, relationship-building and healthy living choices, as we develop a culture of personal ownership and leadership. We will offer these students the unique opportunity to explore their new surroundings and to proactively train them to handle new situations in middle school life successfully as they build relationships with our school’s sixth grade teachers and faculty who will serve as volunteers. All who complete the contract will continue throughout the school year as leader diplomats for a new sixth grade club, the “We Can” Crew. Our team of guidance counselor, school interventionist and media coordinator will facilitate a summer learning experience for up to 80 rising sixth graders based on Leader in Me principles using the novel, Wonder by RJ Palacio. We will schedule 3 3-hour meetings concentrating on self-improvement, team-building and literacy learning opportunities.

Leader in Me Principles
What would be possible if your school were filled with students who were responsible, who showed initiative, who were creative, who knew how to set goals and meet them, who got along with people of various backgrounds and cultures, and who could resolve conflicts and solve problems?
Our school does not merely focus on improving test scores, but provides opportunities for our students to develop their full potential. Leader in Me provides a logical, sequential and balanced process to help proactively design the culture that reflects our vision of the ideal school.
Content from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a key component of the overall The Leader in Me process. The 7 Habits is a synthesis of universal, timeless principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal, which are secular in nature and common to all people and cultures. Wonder Book Club
Another key focus is the book, Wonder by RJ Palacio. The main character in this book is going through a lot of the same issues you are. He is coming middle school for the first time. This book covers what his first year is like from the point of views of the people around August Pullman. As Auggie's family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out. A New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story. We hope you enjoy it and learn a lot from its message.

Healthy Choices: Mind, Body, and Spirit
The primary objectives for this summer program is to target a population of middle school students who are eager and anxious about a major transition in their lives. At this point, we hope to expose them to specialists who speak on each part of their existence, mind-body-spirit-emotions.
Well-thought out snacks are beneficial to children, promoting good nutrition, encouraging lifelong healthful habits and preventing debilitating or deadly diseases. Snacks are especially crucial for children because they are still growing, and healthful snacking at school can lead to better nutrition during foundational years and increased energy and ability to focus. |
