This is a book I have been trying to read for 2 years! I finally got my hands on it, and you were right (Liliana), it was GREAT! It came at a very timely period for me to read this story now. The main character, Starr, witnesses a good childhood friend be shot and murdered by a police officer. What is worse still is this is the second friend she has lost to gun violence. The story is about the journey of Starr and a community torn and riddled with several issues. A book about a life that is not always fair, that does not always make sense. This is a sweet realistic fiction about a teenager who cannot get a handle on his temper. His situation gets so bad at school that he is referred to a psychologist and eventually takes up boxing with a strange set of events. He finds his passion and it helps him become a better person. Another great coming of age story! I loved this great little nonfiction. It is a great resource for teaching financial literacy, while educating on the history and development of Nike. It is good for people who would like to learn about business AND sports. It reads like a "Who Was" series book that focuses on a business instead of a particular person. This realistic fiction is a Coming of Age story about a boy named Marcus (who as the title says, doesn't speak Spanish) even though both his parents are from Puerto Rico. His dad split and moved back there leaving Marcus' mom to care for him and his brother alone. After a couple of incidents, it became a good time for Marcus and his family to "take a break." His mom works for an airline and was able to score some tickets for the three of them to go to Puerto Rico and visit the family. While there, Marcus will go on an adventure that will help him learn what really matters. This realistic fiction was a great story about a middle school girl that has 100 reasons to hate herself. This book is about a journey to love yourself and look past what has been said about you...even if it was by people (like your dad) who should love you and think you are the greatest! In the end, Genesis will come to understand as her world continues to change and go on. This book is a collection of short stories that center around the kids in this one town. Each story has a different protagonist, a different street, with a story that connects to the title in a different way. This is a smart book that is thoughtful, but hard to read in the beginning. It is worth the effort at the end. Hang in there and try "Look Both Ways" today. My second science fiction of the summer??!?? What?! But another one that I loved!! This is a smart story of teenagers being hand-selected for a 3-year mission to another planet. The key is you have to qualify...someone is going back empty-handed. It is Star Trek meets Hunger Games. Do the winners really win?? Read it for yourself and find out! Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 |
