One of my favorite books because it cannot be put into one genre. It is an adventure (with imaginary flying ships and animals, pirates and a deserted island), science fiction (imaginary ornithopters and hydrium), historical fiction ( set in the fictitious past with old-fashioned ways of viewing women and a class system), fantasy (with flying panther-like animals and fictitious places) and finally, a hint of romance! This book really has something for everyone, but make sure your stamina is what it needs to be. Most struggle within the first 50 pages or so to figure out what is happening. This was the opening novel unit with my first eighth grade classes at my new school. It took more sessions of 45 minutes than I/we might have liked. :)
